Getting Here

If you are walking, The Kaikoura Coast Track starts and finishes at Ngaroma, which is about 2 hours drive north of Christchurch, and about ¾ of an hour drive south of Kaikoura.

If you are biking, The Kaikoura Coast Track starts and finishes at The Staging Post, which is about 1.5 hours drive north of Christchurch, and about ¾ of an hour drive south of Kaikoura

Arriving by Car

For walkers: Ngaroma is on Conway Flat, about 7.5km off State Highway 1, the main north/south highway in the South Island. Conway Flat is clearly signposted from SH1, just over 140 kilometres (about 2 hours drive) north of Christchurch, and 40 kilometres (about ¾ of an hour) south of Kaikoura. For bikers: The Staging Post is at Hawkswood, about 1.3km off State Highway 1. It is clearly signposted from the Highway, 130 kilometres (about 1½ hours drive) north of Christchurch, and 50 kilometres (about ¾ of an hour) south of Kaikoura. Check out our directions and map.

Secure car parking is provided at the start. You walk/bike back to your car on the last day.

Arriving by Bus

There are several shuttle bus and coach services between Christchurch and Picton. Ring the bus company and request a drop off/pick up at the Conway River Bridge (if walking) or The Staging Post (if biking). See our bus timetable for further details.

Arriving at Kaikoura by Train

It is possible to take the TranzCoastal train from Christchurch or Picton to Kaikoura.

In this case you will also need to arrange transport from Kaikoura to Ngaroma/The Staging Post by bus (see above).
