Location

The Kaikoura Coast Track starts and finishes at The Staging Post, which is about 1½ hour's drive north of Christchurch, and about ¾ of an hour's drive south of Kaikoura.

Arriving by Car

The Staging Post is at Hawkswood, about 500m off State Highway 1, the main north/south highway in the South Island. It is clearly signposted from the Highway, 140 kilometres (about 1½ hours drive) north of Christchurch, and 50 kilometres (about ¾ of an hour) south of Kaikoura.

Secure car parking is provided at the start. You walk back to your car on the last day.

Arriving by Bus

There are several shuttle bus and coach services between Christchurch and Picton. Most buses can drop you off right at the Staging Post gate, but you must book this in advance. See our bus timetable for further details.

Arriving at Kaikoura by Air/Train

It is possible to take the TranzCoastal train from Christchurch or Picton to Kaikoura.

It is also possible to fly from Wellington to Kaikoura with Sounds Air - check their website or telephone 0800 505 005.

In both these cases you will also need to arrange transport from Kaikoura to the Staging Post by bus (see above).
